Big Northumberland Gear Change

People of all ages and backgrounds around Northumberland are ditching the steering wheel for greener transport methods. We visited schools, families and individuals around the county to capture their commutes by bike and by foot. Hearing their experiences, we learnt how opting for sustainable travel had impacted their lives, improving health and happiness. These films are real examples of a positive leap towards sustainability in the North East, led by individuals. Watch the videos to hear the stories.

Jane

‘Instead of picking up my car keys, I’d get on my bike. I haven’t stopped since.’

Jane’s story is an unusual and impressive one.  An acute medical consultant at a Northumbria Hospital, she cycles to work everyday - and doesn’t let her disability stop her. We filmed and interviewed Jane and created an impression of a ‘day in the life’ to capture her story.

Barndale House School

Award-winning SEND school, Barndale House School in Alnwick, cares about more than just classroom learning.

We spent a day at Barndale and discovered how students and teachers there walk (and run) a daily mile, use balance bikes, and stay active outside. We interviewed pupils, teachers and parents on the positive impact this has for physical and mental health, as well as for the planet. We then edited together this film, which we think conveys the happy, fun-loving place that is Barndale House School.

Allendale Primary School

‘It puts cars second. These are values we’re raising our children with.’

The children and parents of Allendale Primary School have started a green initiative, and are enjoying the benefits. For this video, we filmed their routes to the school through the heart of rural Northumberland. We interviewed teachers and pupils to find out how they’re now appreciating their natural surroundings, feeling energised in lessons and helping the environment too.

Discover Our Land

Discover Our Land is the council’s comprehensive campaign which showcases stories of individuals across the county. From swimming with dolphins to foraging for mushrooms, the region has a lot to offer and this series of videos showcases glorious Northumberland to the world.
